Bipolar millionaire goes missing

The wife of a Hawaii millionaire who has bipolar disorder said she is “beyond desperate” to find her husband after he disappeared over a week ago. Steven Thomas, 36, founder of the anti-spyware software company, Webroot, went missing after being seen in the Waikiki neighborhood of Honolulu June 30, KITV, Honolulu, reported Wednesday.

Scammers Take Advantage Of Social Networking Users

Consumer Affairs Minister Tony Robinson yesterday warned people using networking websites they could expose themselves to scams.

“As more and more Victorians join social networking services, they need to be aware that there is an increasing number of scammers taking advantage of the popularity of these services to steal information and money,” Mr Robinson said.

“Frauds can use personal details listed on these sites to personalise their scam attempts.”

Some scammers use personalised emails persuading victims to give out their bank details, making their claims more believable by allowing their victim to view their MySpace, Facebook or Bebo page.

CUSD Students Charged with Breaking into Schools to Boost Grades

Two CUSD high school seniors have been charged with hacking into the school computer system and changing grades to better their chances of college admission after breaking in to Tesoro High School late at night. Omar Khan, 18, Coto de Caza, is charged with 34 felony counts of altering a public record, 11 felony counts of stealing and secreting a public record, seven felony counts of computer access and fraud, six felony counts of burglary, four felony counts of identity theft, three felony counts of altering a book of records, two felony counts of receiving stolen property, one felony count of conspiracy, and one felony count of attempted altering of a public record. He faces a maximum sentence of 38 years and four months in prison if convicted.

Spyware barriers vital but a hassle

The war over hacking and protecting your computer is an endlessly escalating affair in which the “bad guys” are often a step ahead of the anti-spyware groups.

Yanov, a former e-business executive at Kyrus Corp., said the tools of the computer spying trade are so subtle that professional-grade anti-spyware software should be on every computer you use — and updated “at least weekly.”

Brock Meeks, communications director for the Center for Democracy and Technology in Washington, said most spyware travels through e-mail, launching on your machine when you open an attachment or click a Web link.
